On the third day of Christmas – FAITH! In that one short word is the substance of life. From our first breath to our last, we live by faith. Do you know anyone who lives more than one moment at a time? Me either. We offer encouragement to each other through our reminder that we need to take it ‘one day at time’, but even that’s a stretch. We have this moment and the rest is all by faith.
The shepherds in the fields had great faith. First they were scared half to death by a bright light, a talking angel, then breaking into the silence was an army of angels yelling and singing something about glory to God in the highest and on Earth, peace good will to all men (and women). Would you have wandered away from your sheep, into a busy, congested town, without a roadmap and reservations if you had no faith? Curiosity goes only so far and after that, faith takes over. The shepherds had faith to go in search of a baby and among all the babies in town, this one would be wrapped in cloth lying in a manger. Faith!
The wisemen who came from far away, had faith. They didn’t hop a plane or flag down the nearest taxi for their journey to find the King. They traveled a long distance toward the east with only a star to keep them on course. It was not an overnight success. By the time they reached their destination, Jesus was a young child – maybe even 2 years old. Seriously, men who were considered wise, followed a star? For more than a year? That took faith. A what about that nasty King Herod who cunningly asked them to report back to him on exactly where they discovered Jesus and they vowed to do so. Then by an act of God they learned that Herod was up to no good and was going to kill Jesus before he had a chance to take over and ruin Herod’s control of his kingdom. The wisemen could have been killed themselves for defying the king’s command. Where did that bravery come from? Faith!
Wisement still seek Him. Today, we still live by faith in something. Hebrews 11:1 Faith in action means we have confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Faith gives us hope…. even though we can’t see the end, have no idea of the outcome of our actions. But 2 Corinthians 5:7 we walk by faith, not by sight. Faith!
On this third day of Christmas …. Let’s live by faith and use it to make a difference in our world today.
