Getting to the Promised Land

What is on your agenda today? Do you feel like you’re all alone?  Or maybe you’re excited about this day, but are unsure where it’s going to take you.  Maybe it’s just another day and you haven’t given is much thought.  In all those ways, no matter what, God is there with you.
Joshua was the assistant to Moses.  Think of how that equates to being an assistant today. The assistant is involved in the minute details of the action. While the boss if over there leading and commanding, the assistant is behind the scenes pulling ropes and attending to every detail of the changing scenery. Helping Moses on his missions must have seemed impossible to Joshua at times, but he persevered. I’m sure Joshua looked up to Moses and was eager to go to work alongside of and learn from him.  But then, the unthinkable happened and Moses was taken from him and Joshua was suddenly thrust into a new role. In fact, Joshua was going to be the leader as the People of Israel crossed into the land Promised to Moses.
That has always made me wonder.  Do you think Joshua had some pangs of regret or even guilt? Moses was the one on a quest for the Promised Land – but he never got to go in.  I think I would have been instantly fearful if God told me I was going to have to lead his people now and I would have felt guilty for being chosen to lead them into the Promised Land.  That would be wrong thinking, of course because none of the Moses story caught God by surprise.  He was orchestrating the whole story.
If you’re wondering today about where you’re going or where is God in all that’s happening, read the story in Joshua about how God came alongside Joshua when his life was turned upside down.  Here are a few verses from Joshua 1 in the Message translation.  “Get going, Joshua!  Cross this Jordan River, you and all the people. Cross to the country I’m giving to the People of Israel – just as I promised Moses…. It’s all yours. All your life, no one will be able to hold out against you. In the same way I was with Moses, I’ll be with you. I won’t give up on you; I won’t leave you. Strength! Courage! You are going to lead this people…. Give it everything you have, heart and soul. Make sure you carry out The Revelation that Moses commanded you. Don’t get off track, so as to make sure you get to where you’re going. And don’t for a minute let this Book of The Revelation be out of mind. Ponder and meditate on it day and night, making sure you practice everything written in it. Then you’ll get where you’re going; then you’ll succeed. Haven’t I commanded you? Strength! Courage! Don’t be timid; don’t get discouraged. God, your God, is with you every step you take.”
Do not fear. Don’t get off track. Know that He is with you.  Recognize this: No matter what, no matter where, life is better when God is there.
Let’s get out there!
