Advent Theme: Faith – Something to Sing About

When I was a kid, way back when dirt was created, we used to sing a song in church that went something like this: “I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever, I will sing, I will sing. I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever, I will sing of the mercies of the Lord. With my mouth will I make known, thy faithfulness to all generations. “  I still remember my brother, Vance, who is now a pastor himself leading the congregation in singing Psalm …

Faith – Baby vs Strong Man

Do you ever ask God for one thing and you’re baffled when you get something else, entirely different? I know. Me too. It might take a long time to understand that God knew what he was doing, but God said, “Trust me on this. I’m doing what is best for you,” he meant it. (2 Corinthians 8:10) The Israelites must have been baffled when they said, “God we need a king the the other nations.” And God said, “You know what? I’m going to do better than that! The Advent scripture …

In search of the ultimate gift: Advent Week 1 – December 3

What’s your morning routine? I sort of have one, I guess. There’s comfort in routine, like firing up the Keurig and enjoying my own fresh brewed dark roast coffee. It’s the best! Join me and read today’s advent story. As we were driving to Nebraska last week, we passed a semi load of Christmas trees. We got close enough to see if the truck was from Michigan, but ~sigh~ it was from Minnesota. A lot of people in the west are going to enjoy those trees, some of which had to …

FAITH: First week of Advent

December 2, 2015 Advent theme: Faith The Advent scripture for today is Isaiah 40:1-5. These words were written to God’s people about the time they were going to be released from oppression and captivity that had lasted for many years.  In these verses, there is promise of hope and freedom. Through his words, Isaiah is saying hang on, don’t give up. Get on the road with God and stay there. Keep your faith in him. Do you have faith? Do you keep that faith? There’s a difference. When we keep …

Advent Week 3 Theme: Joy – Time to get our faith act together

If you’ve been touring the Bible with us over the past couple weeks you might remember that Zechariah was given joyful news from an angel that he and Elizabeth were going to have a baby even though they had given up on that idea years before. Zechariah didn’t believe it, even though the angel was delivering the message straight from the only infallible and omnipotent God. What happened? Because of his lack of faith, Zechariah had to deal with lack of voice for the duration of Elizabeth’s pregnancy. You also …

Advent Week 2 Theme: Hope – The Real Reason Jesus Was Born On Earth

The advent reading for today expresses the entire reason for Jesus’ leaving heaven and coming to earth.  Notice the last few lines. In the Old Testament days of Moses, people had to live by the law. God gave Moses the 10 commandments that covered everything people would need to do to live in harmony with God and each other. Then the legislature got together and started the add-on process and well – we know how that turned out.  But back to our story. God sent Jesus to Earth for one …

Advent Theme: Faith – Week 1, Day 5

Do you remember the story about Abram? Do you recall that he refused to take kickbacks from the king even though it would have made him richer? In fact Abram was a giver. He was in God’s favor, but still he expresses fear of his future. He was concerned that even though he had it all materially, he was desperate for children to share it with. I’m not a theologian, but to me, the lack of children was a symptom of a deeper spiritual issue. It is only God who …

The impact of one life

You’ll never regret being kind. Does anyone remember traveling in the south and reading road signs that spelled out an entire sentence strung together in incremental words? Or maybe they advertised Berma Shave and Ipana Toothpaste. I haven’t traveled outside of Michigan to the south for several years so those signs might have been uprooted and banned by now. One sign in particular still stands out in my mind; not because it had a cute picture or was unmistakably ‘marketing’, but because it simply stated ‘You’ll never regret being kind.” …

Pathway to Peace

I’m working on a pathway to peace. I wish I could say it’s already perfected, but it is not.  If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s this. Today is all I’ve got; tomorrow is the result of how I live it.  Considering what I want most tomorrow has led me to design a pathway to get there. Daily disciplines toward PEACE tomorrow. Prayer Exercise Accountability Character Encourage Each discipline has defined characteristics which I’ll be sharing in a future post.  Why am I talking about this now?  Why am I …

Advent Theme: Peace – Week 3, Day 1

Today’s scripture passage is so ‘me’ sometimes. Even though I know God is standing by to give me a solution to a problem or supply an answer to a perplexing question, I forget to consult Him. Besides, I can handle this one. Right? When I do that, I’m robbing myself of peace. Here’s what’s going on at the time Isaiah 7 was written. Maybe we can all identify with it. (Well, except for the part about Ahaz being one of the worst kings ever.)  So here’s the story.  God told …
